!! Bug in SST causes Joystick freezes !!

Hello there,

it's FINALLY my first post.

I bought my Saitek X52 (don't see the point in the pro version) on June
22th especially for the free release of Mechwarrior 4 Mercs.
I searched the forum for a MW4 profile. Of course the first thing I
did was run against the "outdated-dat-file-wall". Luckily the pr0 version
was in the same thread.

Well I already clicked on the activation link in my email but even one hour
later I couldn't download the profile.

No rights until an admin reviews my registration.

Since that day I checked once or twice daily if my account was finally
activated. Well today on the 26th the day has finally come so I can finally share my horrible first day experience.

In the night of June 22th I realized I would have to create my own
Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries pr0 profile. First I wrote all keyboard commands
on a paper and fed them into the profiler.

Then I took my sweet time to assign the most commands to the buttons. That was actually the fun part!
It gave me a satisfying feeling of control to know that I can decide
precisley which buttons will have certain effects in the game.

That satisfying feeling quickly changed into a disappointment and confusion
when I realized that I only could shoot a few times in Mechwarrior 4 Mercs
until the Joystick didn't do anything anymore (the axis still worked but no
button did).
Later I tested the profile inside SST and it had the same effect. First
everything worked fine, but after like 10-20 button presses all buttons
seized functioning.

It took me many hours (i actually didn't sleep that night altough
I had to go to work in the next morning)
until I found out what the
problem was.
(of course I tried different Versions of the SST software and reinstalled it several times)

The descriptions of the button names were too long!

For example I named one button "Target Next Enemy" (17 chars) or "Target
Object Under Reticular" (29 chars). After a lot of trial and error I found
out that the maximum number of characters in a button description is 16. (exactly like the number of characters the MFD can display!)

If one of your button descriptions is higher that 16 characters ALL your
buttons will stop working after you pushed it a few times.

I hope I helpe a few peoples out there by finding out about that.

@Saitek: Please limit the number of characters of a button description to
16 within SST.

Kind regards

Dater

Wish I had found your post earlier

I had the same problem and like to have never figured it out,, until like you I discovered the mfd limitation... It seems instead of fixing the problem.. Saitek simply developed a new joystick (the pro) Which seems to scroll the mfd. So IMHO Saitek doesn't care for those of us with Out Of Date equipment( Even though I bought the standard cause at that time I couldn't see the difference for the money... But Damn They Sure Showed Me didn't they

Now if I get a new Profile I go through all the button names and count the Characters

Wouldn't you know it, Saitek makes a fabulous product, BUT, are not very receptive to customers. You might ask repeatedly but good luck getting a sensible reply.

What really bugs me,,,, is there is no way to reverse the throttle direction (for those %>@^&%$# games that insist on a fixed response). Why can we not simply have a switch (software or hardware) to reverse throttle direction?

My feelings are that Saitek simply doesn't take good care of it's customers - like trying to get your button naming problem fixed (I agree it needs fixed), and like trying to get my throttle issue addressed, good luck getting new or old profiles from Saitek - you got to make em yourself or find em on the web, but Saitek won't help you. Like I said, Saitek does not take good care of customers.

It's a shame Saitek makes such a doggone good stick & throttle 'cause I would rather have bought it from some other manufacturer that gives a damn about it's customers. I am funny that way - I like to be appreciated for my purchase and I expect polite, curteous, and continuing support until warranty is expired. If there is a problem, I expect Saitek to help - not blow me off. But a single customer or two, cannot make Saitek be nice to us. They get our dough and they are done with us. That's what I believe.

Hello Support!

I'm reviving this thread as we're now in 2012 and I also experience this software lock-up when using profiles with more than 16 characters with my X-52 now that I moved to windows 7 64bits.

I'm using the latest drivers and SST software from your website.

I can't say I'm really enjoying modifying all my profiles to deal with an issue that has been existing for years apparently...
Any update on this issue would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Sylvain

Hi,
the 16 characters on the MFD is the limitation of the hardware. there is no fix for this as it is not a standard LCD display, I hope this clears up the question.
The only way to have your message on the screen is to abbreviate some of the text

Hello Mike,

Thanks for replying!
Unfortunately you misread my post. Please have a look my expanded post below together with the detailed original post to Understand what I mean.

I understand you cannot display more than 16 characters on the throttle LCD.
This is not an issue for me as I don't read the description on the LCD when playing.

As I use the X-52 for a lot of different games I use long descriptions (more than 16 characters) the SST software so that I can easily review my game profile before selecting it.

The problem I experience lies with the SST software...
When pressing a key on the joystick with an action description of more than 16 characters, only the first 16 characters are displayed (not a problem) but the SST software very often locks up/freezes. The action description remains displayed on the LCD. As a result all subsequent keypresses are being ignored (BIG problem).
The only way to solve this is to unplug the X-52 from the USB port and plug it in again.

This SST bug was not present on windows XP but as you can see it has already been reported on W7 since a few years now and it is still unresolved.

We need a new SST version or a new W7 driver for the X-52 that avoids this SST software lockup when using profiles with keypresses having descriptions of more than 16 characters.

Looking forward to read your feedback...

Regards,
Sylvain

Hi,
can you look in your add remove folder and see if you have more than one ST installed if so remove the old ones and try the profile again. I have just tried to replicate the same problem you have, found that it does do strange things if more than one ST is installed. of remove all the profile and download the latest from our web site.
If the problem is still present can you send me your profile to look at.

Hi, we are now aware of the problem and is being looked in to.
I have spoken to the programmer on this matter and he is going to fix it very soon just as soon as his work load allows. in the mean time can you try and use shorter names see if that work for you. it should not be long getting the fix done. sorry for the inconvenience and delay.

Thank you Mike. That is excellent news!

While your programmer is looking at it he can maybe also try to get rid of the display artifacts some users (myself included) sometimes observe.

eg. Mode 1

is sometimes displayed on the screen as
Modede 1 or Mode 1 1

Same thing happens with the action descriptions...
Therefore, even when using shorter names, the SST soft sometimes locks up when these artifacts cause the number of characters to overflow the display.

Cheers,
Sylvain

Hi, The miss spelled words, have you tested the stick on an other pc, just to eliminate the pc chip set.
Also are you using a USB hub or a USB extension cable.

Hi Mike,

Yes I do get the mis-spelled words on the MFD too.

My X52 is from... 2005!
Yep, 2-0-0-5 and still going strong...
Only the rudder axis is spiking like mad but I'm not using that one anymore ever since I bought my rudder pedals.

I'm extremely happy with the hardware... it's only the Saitek software that is causing me trouble since I switched to W7 64 bits.

Hope we can fix the lockup issue.

Cheers,
S.

EDIT:
- not using a USB hub or Extension cable
- plugged in directly on the USB on the back.
- X-52 plugged in on other PC shows the same MFD behavior.
