View Full Version : Eclipse Keyboard Volume FIX!!

!!! WARNING !!!
Use this registry .reg file at your own risk, i am not responsible for any problems that occur, make SURE to backup your current hidserv registry folder before using this .reg file.
this fix only pertains to people that are getting an "error 2" when trying to manually start the HID input Service.
This did fix my volume control problems... so i will pass on the values i had to add/change to make the system revert back to HID Input again working correctly.
simple download this .reg file, save to desktop or wherever, and double click it. Then reboot and try your volume... i made it as easy as possible without forcing to make people walk-thru repair themselves..
Again, PLEASE remember to backup your old HidServ registry folder (right click/export) the path is Hkey_Local_Machine/System/Services
hope it works as well for you as it did for me, ive spent the last 6 hours troubleshooting this with a friend over voice comms... and WITHOUT re-installing windows, or replacing all my dll files... go figure ;)
Eclipse Fix (http://ddz.net/saitek/SaitekEclipseFix-XP.zip)
if you know your way around regedit (again remember to backup the file before you edit it)
go to Hkey_local_machine/system/services/hidserv
in the HidServ folder modify the "type" to hexidecimal 20
then goto the sub folder underneath hidserv called parameters
if ServiceDll isnt there, create it (yes its case sensative) as a new expandable string value, then modify that, and add the following value data into it
%SystemRoot%\System32\hidserv.dll
now just reboot and try..let me know if anyone else has some luck
fyi i run win xp pro on service pack 2

I downloaded and tried the registry fix and it didn't work, but I have a number of different Control Sets in my registry. I manually edited each control set as suggested to change the hidserv values and rebooted. IT WORKED! I've been trying to fix this problem without reinstalling Windows XP for 2 months now. Thanks! :)

glad it worked for you dave, thats one of the reasons i put the walkthru up too, just in case the reg didnt fix everyones issue.
believe me, this was about 6 hours of frustration trying to figure this out, but even a little irritating thing like controls not working...
just takes a little away from that "awe factor" of a product...
its a great keyboard...
its just lack of specific drivers that is the relative hiccup :(
with the amount of stuff people have customized in their windows, there should always be a way to solve a problem without forcing customers to go the fresh install route.

Thanks for the fix iZWhiplash. Unfortunately I cannot use it though. I need to disable the HID entries for the Eclipse in device manager to get my Joystick to work in games (Saitek Evo FFB). Once I do this the volume fix stops working...
Great while it lasted

I also was suffering from NO volume control so downloaded the reg fix in this thread .. Didn't work
In services when I looked the HID input service was not running ... so checked against another PC on which it was running .. Spotted the difference .. as iZWhiplash said in his explination ServiceDll has to be created as an EXPANDABLE string value. When you use his reg/key add in it creates as a string value.. also his instruction pouint to the wrong area of the registry .. he points to Hkey_local_machine/system/services/hidserv/parameters wheras it should be HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\HidServ\Parameters
So looking in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\HidServ\Parameters
I deleted the ServiceDll string and manually created an EXPANDABLE string value called ServiceDll with the value %SystemRoot%\System32\hidserv.dll
Went to services and started the HID input service.. its started ! and now I have volume controls :-)

thanks for the extra work G,
i knew my fix wouldnt work for entirely everyone and i assumed there was an alternative workaround, but once i changed mine there was no way of testing to see other fixes as the service started itself, and there was no backtracking to look deeper into it...
had it not been for someone who needed to look further into the problem that mine wouldnt solve, namely you, some people would still have the issue, nice work man :)

hello..
I just bought the eclipse last week nice board. but the first thing I noticed was my volume controls do not work.
checked all my windows suff and nothing helped so I found this forum.
I went and did the registery thing and everthing looks as it should still no go.
now the odd part.
when I bring up the windows volume control window and hit the keyboard volume controls the slider will actually move just a tiny bit up and down. and I also noticed the same thing happens with my usb headset volume controls.
so it seems to me that the keys are working and giving input but something seems to be restricting the slider from moving.
Its really annoying.the only control that works is the dopey windows slider.
if anyone has any ideas they would be greatly apprecated.
thanks

I've tried practically everything I've read in these forums from messing with the registry to replacing hidserv.dll. Right now, the process is running, but the volume keys still do not work.
Also, a further oddity:
When I remote desktop to my work computer, the volume keys do actually work on that machine through my remote desktop connection.
Both are Windows XP Professional with service pack 2. My work computer is on a domain, but I don't think that makes any difference.
Obviously, more things have been installed to my home computer... I have several game devices including a saitek joystick and gamepad, along with a 4x4 usb midi controller and a USB sampler.
I don't know if any of this stuff would prevent the volume keys from working on my home computer, but any input would be welcome. I just think it's weird that they refuse to work at home but will work through a remote connection on my work computer.

It just means that the HID Input Service is running correctly on your work computer whereas it's not on your home PC. One thing I'd like to check with you there though as regards Whiplash's instructions - did you create the ServiceDll entry as an expandable string value or as a normal string value. It does need to be an expandable one otherwise it won't work.

24th November 2005, 17:20
Yep...
ServiceDLL REG_EXPAND_SZ %SystemRoot%\System32\hidserv.dll
I double checked, the registry entries for both my home computer and work computer look completely identical.

Click Start and then Control Panel.
In Control Panel open the Administrative Tools icon and then open the Component Services icon in there. Click Services (local) on the left side of the screen that comes up and then look down the list of services on the right side of the screen for one called HID Input Service. See what it says next to it under the status column - it needs to say "Started" for the volume controls to be running. If it says "Stopped" then try right clicking it and then clicking Start - see if that gets the volume controls working.
If it doesn't or if you get any errors when trying to start it then use the Start>Search tool in Windows and look for a file called HIDSERV.DLL - if it finds any copies of that file then note which folders they are in on your PC please and let me know this info. Also let me know the errors that you get when trying to start the HID Input Service.

Did your previous keyboard have volume controls and any software installed for it? Have you tried uninstalling that software? At this point it's the only thing left I can think of that would prevent this from working.

I have a problem with my volume buttons..
I'm running a fresh install of windows mce2005. I have installed the updates from windows update for this keyboard and have tried the reg fix too. I already had an expandable string variable for ServiceDll.
Basically my vol- button does nothing - but makes the volume level appear accross my screen in green.
My vol+ button mutes the sound (shows volume accross screen to zero) - but doesn't unmute it
My mute button does nothing - no screen indication either
Any ideas?

Hi,
An onscreen indicator in Windows itself would indicate that you've got something else installed there (because the Eclipse doesn't come with anything that would provide an onscreen indicator) that could be causing a problem - especially true if the keyboard that came with the PC had media controls on it. If that's the case then try uninstalling the drivers/software for the old keyboard and see if that makes a difference.
Otherwise, are you able to test the keyboard on another PC to see if it does the same thing on there?

oddly enough I just hooked up a set of 5.1 speakers to my comp with my audigy gamer card (which I havent used in ages)and the volume controls worked?!!
but as soon as I switch back to my headset for gaming no good.
dont know what the heck would prevent them from working with my usb headset.
I have just the basic creative drivers for the card and just windows drivers for the headset.
also odd the mute button always works.

In response to the Tech Support:
No, I don't have any other special software for keyboards installed that would prevent the eclipse from working.
However, the other poster talking about his sound card gave me a thought... I don't exactly have a "normal" sound card... it's an M Audio Delta 1010 for high quality recording. Could this be what's causing the problem? I also have a Creative Labs AudioPCI installed purely for the MIDI port, but it's not my system's default sound device.

Hmmm - try switching the audio device and see if it makes a difference. Go to Control Panel, open the Sounds and Audio Devices icon, click Audio at the top and then change the default device for sound playback to the Creative Labs card instead.

Yep... that's the problem. Works fine with the Creative Labs card. Heh, too bad I don't use that card for audio. Oh well, at least you can add this as a possible issue to your database.

Thanks for the timely reply Richard. I've read the forum and tried all the fixes listed; no luck. I think it has somethig to do with my using the on (mother) board sound. As I said it's not a big deal with me I just like things to work. This little glitch in no way detracts from my absolute love of this keyboard, as I said elsewhere in the forums, I've never payed more than $15 dollars for a keyboard in my life but this was (so far ) money well spent.
Bye the bye - If any new ideas present themselves please post

Hi, just got an eclipse keyboard and the sound buttons aren't working.
I've tried everything mentioned so far in this thread but nothing works.
I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a Intel mobo with P4 2.0 GHz and integrated audio.
The keyboard works great and the HID service is running and starting with no errors. I added the ServiceDll entry with an expandable string but it didn't work after a restart. I also changed the type entry to 20 hexadecimal, no luck with that either. I'm guessing that my problem has to do with using integrated audio.
Help please!

Just got the eclipse too. Love it! Having a problem with similar keys. Mute works, I can lower volume, but not raise it. Also, on the right numpad, the midle keys( 4, 5, and 6) dont work (others do).
My specs:
1800 athlon xp
fic mobo an11
768 pc2100 ddr
9600pro
creative labs - audigy gamer
Also, I did have a previous logitech keyboard with media keys and drivers for them installed, but I uninstalled them before this keyboard. I had another keyboard before that by dynex that had media keys and it worked fine, then the logitech worked flawless after that.

I have this problem as well. I cannot get my HID Input Service to start. I try and start it and receive the Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified. I made the registry fix on page one and added in the expandable string file "ServiceDll with the data "%SystemRoot%\System32\hidserv.dll" Still a no go.
Upon searching for a Hidserv.dll file it is found in two places one in the WINDOWS/system 32 folder and one in the WINDOWS/ServicePackFiles/i386 folder.
Ive tried everything I can think of. I had Logitech with media controls before and didnt have this problem, althought I never did check this service to see if it was running. That keyboard was P/S2 though if that makes a difference.
If it makes any difference, when you double click the service the menu that pops up has a blank labelled "Path to executable" and mine has: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe-k netsvcs
I appreciate any help anyone can give me on this, because its driving me nuts.
EDIT: Ive finally got it working, but I did it in an apparently unique way. The manual fix posted did nothing so after I did that I insalled the file on top of it and now it works like a charm so : / whatever, im happy it works.

Hello and Good Day,
I have a EMU1212 sound card which uses a piece of software called Patchmix to control all output. I would like to have the media controls on the Eclipse keyboard opperate the volume out and mute controls within the Patchmix application. I have foobar2000 working the control directly, but cannot get the keyboard, window media player or iTunes to operate it. My question and concern is only in reference to the Eclipse Keyboard...

I also have the problem of no volume controls. However I use the onboard sound from my mainboard, but in the past i have installed two different sound cards. A hercules muse 5.1 surround sound card and a crappy piece of junk phillips one. However i just use earphones now so i removed these two cards. When I ran the "Eclipse fix", i noticed that the keyboard controls were responding, but not on the wave channel (the one which actually controls sound output in the windows volume controls). They were responding on the "Front Speaker" channel which of co**** when using earphones on a single on board jack plug, doesn't do anything. i was just wondering if this was similar to other peoples issues, or if it wasn't do you know how i could switch control to the "Wave" channel?
If this brings people any closer to resolution of this problem and they know where to go from here, thats great, but can you tell me too?

Today I received the Saitek Eclipse Keyboard. I love it.
Obviously, since I'm posting here, I have the same volume keys problem as you guys.
Well I found how why the fix suggested in this thread don't work on my system:
I am NOT using the default windows shell (explorer.exe). I am using BBLean, which is a blackbox shell for windows.
Figures, explorer.exe probably handles the task of interpretating the volume key presses into actual system specific messages, and without it loaded, the keys don't work.
So unless Saitek comes up with a solution really fast, I'm going to code a small driver that will handle this in place of explorer.exe. I'll even do it better, for example: Pressing the Volume UP/Down keys will increase/decrease the global volume by say, 5%, but if you also press CTRL, it'll be by 10%, and if you press SHIFT, by 1%.
I'll keep you guys informed on the process.

I had (a similar) problem:
My volume up/down/mute worked.... but it stopped working.
My fix? I unplugged and then plugged into a different USB port. Worked fine.
Replugged into the port it was in originally - and it is now working fine.... so just try replugging...
Running XP pro SP2 (I believe they did not work in DSLinux)
Sound is onboard: C-Media AC97
Related note: I am running a freeware program that uses the windows and up down keys to control the volume as well, and it has an on screen display.
It's available here :
http://www.softarium.com/soundvolumehotkeys/
It only shows with the hotkeys, not the extra volume keys above the number pad. I haven't noticed any conflicts between the two controls, and the install was not the cause of built in volume keys stopping. (I'm not sure what that was).

I have a MSI MS-7291 mobo that has built in audio, Realtek HD Audio Card.
And I'm also running Windows Media Center 2005...
When I hit the mute button, it works. Hit it again, un-mutes.
When I hit the volume down button, the volume goes down.
BUT... when I hit the volume up button,
the volume drops ALL the way to the BOTTOM like a rock.
It's not muted, it just cranked the volume all the way down...
I can see this happen because the 'Master Volume' window is open.
And if I HOLD down the volume up button, the Master Volume slider bar bounces up and down minutely (still sitting at the bottom) as if doing a little dance.
Yes, I've manually edited my registery... but no changes needed to be made.
I even downloaded and merged the fix into my registry for kicks and giggles, no dice.
Any ideas?
Update: Hooked it up do a different usb port, same bizzare malfunction. Then I hooked it up to my laptop, and the volume up works fine...
So it's either A) Media Center Edition or B) My sound card - That's my guess. Anybody get it working on their Media Center Edition of XP?

Well, I unistalled my sound card drivers, reinstalled them, and this time around the program 'Realtek HD Audio Manager' installed... and now my volume up button works. What's cool now too, is that when I hit mute, the word "Mute" pops up in the lower right corner of my screen, and when I hit volume up/down it says "Volume" and shows a graph on my screen...
Weird.

Hi,
Have you got the hidserv.dll file in your C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder? If not then do a Google search for the file, download it from wherever you find it and then copy it to that folder. Then see if you can start the service.

Well...with the help of this forum and Microsoft knowledge base...I finally got my up and down volume keys to work! So here it is: First I downloaded the registry fix by iZWhiplash, then I added gdavisons expandable string to the registry, then I went into Windows Componant Services to enable the HID Input Service and got a Error 1084. I Googled "error 1084" and found I had to open the HID Input Service, go to the Log On tab and Enable Profile 1 then I had to go to the General tab and make sure the Startup Type was set to Automatic! I also installed the MS Multi Media driver as suggested here (http://www.saitek.com/uk/supp/eclipdrmedia.htm)
Maybe Saitek should have just mailed me the parts to this keyboard so I could assemble it myself and make this experience complete! What a hassle to get this keyboard to work the way it was supposed to work. Maybe they should ship an install disk with this product.
Anyway...thanks for everyones help, I love the keyboard and I have the satisfaction of knowing I worked for this one.:D

Hi,
As I've probably said previously in this thread, this fault is not caused by anything that we have done on the keyboard. Windows has a generic service for these kinds of controls - the HIDInput Service - and the Eclipse keyboard's multimedia controls conform absolutely to the specifications in that service for activating these functions.
What this thread proves is that some people's PCs do not have the HID Input Service correctly configured. All we can do in those instances is point people in the right direction to try and sort this issue, but it is no way caused by us.
@TuRn3r - Is this a normal Windows Vista desktop PC that has never had any kind of device installed on it which controls the volume etc.? If you look in your list of services, is the HID Input Service running?

Hi,
Does this page help at all?
http://smallvoid.com/article/winnt-services-hidserv.html
As for the light - all lights on the keybaord stay on unless you turn them off using the illumination setting button.

C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalSystemNetworkRestricted
is the path... but i do not get an error when starting it. it just does not do the volume.
i tried the reg fix, even though it was for xp. before trying the fix if i hit the volume my old slider for my M$ keyboard would pop up, the slider would not move, but the volume would go up and down.
after the fix i have no volume control when i use either keyboard. i have tried redoing the drivers and selecting other drivers, no luck.
and of course i did not back up the reg entry (yes i am king of the idiots!) so i can not even go back to having a half working volume.....
any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

ok I half solved the problem. I decided to try and run wmp and see if the volume problem still affected wmp. guess what? the volume now works!
I closed wmp and i still have volume control. so i think that is solved....but I sill have the old M$ volume slider that does not move even though the volume is changing.
could it be tied to the runddl.exe error?
whenever i try to click one of the tabs in Control panel > keyboards, it crashes and the error is :
windows host process (rundll32) has stopped working
ckeck online or close (checking online is no help)
here are the details of the error:

Hi,
Bars onscreen? That's not part of Windows so that must be the software from another keyboard that's present doing that.
Also let me know the errors that you get when trying to start the HID Input Service.

reg fix from post #1 has been deleted on hosting server. Can someone please re-post? I have just purchased the Eclipse II and volume controls do not work. Saitek - maybe you could issue an official patch for this or something? I am running XP SP2.

Hi,
It's not our fault to fix - it's an issue with your installation of Windows, not the keyboard!
You don't need the registry fix file - just follow the instructions in the first post underneath the fix download link and that should sort it.

I have found that on my system the volume buttons do work if you look at the the master controller. The problem I have is that my volume is tied to the WAVE bar and not the MASTER bar.
Is there a way of changing the function to interact with the WAVE volume control?????????
Others may want to look into wether they are using the MASTER for volume or the WAVE function. This has to do with the ENVY24 sound card drivers and Optical output that I use.

No, there's no way to change it. We call a specific volume function in Windows' HID Input Service - on the vast majority of PCs this will change the master volume. If it's changing a different volume on your PC then your soundcard may well be doing things very differently to the standard and there's nothing we can do about that, I'm afraid.

It is moving the master volume it is just that my sound card uses the wave function. I would like it to move the wave control but understand if it can't be done.

Ah I see - I slightly misread what you wrote then. Yes, there's no way we can change the volume that it adjusts - it's set to control the master volume and that's all it can do.
