View Full Version : Aviator (AV8R) joystick twitches

I have a 2 month old Aviator joystick that just recently is giving me the fits.
In the calibration test screen, without touching the stick, the axes crosshair is twitching a very small amount. If you wiggle the joystick a bit, it will twitch a little more. Then if you move it once again, it will stop twitching. Very erratic.
Now, if you look at the deadzones, the x axis is twitching back and forth about an 1/8th inch. If you move the stick slightly, both x and y axis will begin twitching. Move the stick again, and they stop twitching.
The reason I mention this background info is because I believe it is affecting the performance while using flight simulator 2004. Regardless of 2D or virtual cockpit, while flying with no autopilot, trimmed for level, hands off flight, at anytime if you stop any control movements on the stick, within 3 seconds the stick will pitch the plane nose foreward about 5 degrees. In virtual cockpit mode, you can actually see the stick momentarily twitch foreward and pop back level. In the meantime, the throttle control is twitching slightly with no input from my hand.
I have unplugged the joystick, tried it again, same problem. The stick worked great for the first 6 weeks but this is driving me crazy! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, is anyone else having problems with the search function of this forum?
No matter what word I put in the search field, there are NEVER any matches. Not for Aviator, AV8R, x45, or even in desperation, joystick!!

Hi,
That does sound like it has a fault. Are you able to test it on another PC to see if it does the same thing on there?

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the quick response. Yes I have tried it on another computer, same results. It does seem to be pointing to an electrical/mechanical problem. What are my options?

Well it's well within warranty of course so you need to either return it to the store where it was purchased for an exchange or, if you're in the US, contact our techsupport by email to obtain a returns authorisation number and returns address.

Richard, I sent a email to tech support more than a day ago. How long should it take for them to respond?

It's usually the same day or next. Try techsupport@saitek.com instead.

I have the exact same problem!! (by the way sorry If I'm grave digging here.)
Unfortunately, it hasn't really been a problem until the last 3 months or so, and I've had the stick for over a year now, so no chance of returning it. I've done the registry deletes as suggested, but its still not working.....
A bit of extra info: I'm using the stick with XP SP2, and using the Beta Drivers and Beta SST software.
Has anything more been found out about this problem since the last post?

I've had the stick for over a year now, so no chance of returning it.
As long as you've had it for under 2 years (which is our warranty period) then you're fine to get it exchanged. Get in touch with techsupport@saitek.com for further help.

I didn't purchase any coverage stuff, or did the warranty come with the stick? I got it the summer of 07.

New (today) AV8R on Vista 32bit/XP Pro. Also had to scan the forums manually, since the forums Search doesn't seem to be working.
Twitching on X, Y & Z axis, including both throttles. Seen this before (on other joysticks) & have never really considered it a fault previously. Can dampen/negate the twitching on the X, Y & Z axis by creating deadzones for each. Not a problem. However, the twitching throttles are a problem.. the deadzones don't work the same way for the throttles & I don't seem to be able to dampen/negate the twitching. Is this really a fault or am I missing something?
Thanks.

Hello Kail,
no solution, sorry, but I have the same problem on 3 sticks in a row (AV8R and X52).
http://www.saitekforum.com/showthread.php?t=15528
Same problem on 3 different compues as well. This is crazy - no idea what would cause this. In case it is a quality issue, Saitek has huge problems IMO for it to occur on three different sticks...
Pls post if you find a solution. Thx.

Hi Gunter, thanks for your response.
I've just been looking a the various twitching & jiggling issues on the forums (most of which wasn't visible until I registered.. probably why Search didn't find anything & why I posted where I did). Although Saitek's people seem to be saying "hardware fault" a fair bit, I'm currently having a hard time believing that.. surely they'd be overwhelmed with returns by now. Also as you've discovered replacements & even different models seem to demonstrate the same issue. Surely their QA can't be that bad?
As I said, I'm not that concerned (at the moment) by the X, Y & Z axis's, since I believe that I can control those with the deadzones. But, the throttles don't work like the other axis's & the deadzone seems fairly useless to me.. unless I'm missing something (I hope). Other than that, the Deadzones tab would make a fine visualisation plug-in for WinAMP IMHO. :D
If I discover anything, I will be sure to let you know.
